StatementThe process of creating art is a wonderfully meditative experience: from forming shapes, to mixing colors, cutting and collaging, to applying vibrant dyes to shimmering white silk... it is a true synergy of relaxation and stimulation.
I'm interested in using my art as a platform to uplift and inspire others, though the deep inner joy that is cultivated in my process.
Bio
I am a self-employed artist living in Rehoboth, MA, also working part time in Providence, RI for a local nonprofit.
I have been an active participant in local arts shows and festivals since April of 2010, primarily exhibiting and selling my hand painted silk scarves, as well as some fine art. On 10-10-10, I launched my online store for scarves, "Joy in My Studio", which became an official registered business. I have since gained experience teaching silk painting workshops, and have received national recognition and awards for my fine art.
This year, I'm looking to sustain the momentum I have worked to build with my scarf business, and devote more time to creating and exhibiting fine art. I'm most interested in finding new ways of merging the craft and science of silk painting with my fine art, through experimental methods in mixed media. I'm so excited to see where 2012 leads.
Background
I have been painting and drawing my entire life, and am fortunate to have consistently had the support of my family in my creative endeavors.
I grew up in the small, New England town of Essex, MA and lived on a big, yellow farm with acres of woods and fruit orchards for the "farm kids" to all run and play. We had chickens, cows, sheep, horses, pigs, etc., and even some exotic animals like peacocks, emus, a llama named B.J., and a "zedonk".
I spent my teenage years and early twenties living with my mom, dad, and older brother in the beautiful coastal town of Rockport, MA - an true artist's mecca, and where I fell in love with the ocean. During this time I became deeply immersed in making art, taking every class available in high school, and had a very devoted teacher who helped me to earn enough art scholarships to put myself through college.
I graduated from Umass Amherst in 2007 with a BFA in painting and minor in art history. I had the pleasure of working at The Rockport Art Association and befriended many of the resident artists and colorful locals. It was here where I discovered the world of fiber art, when I was invited to tour Judith Goetemann’s silk painting studio in scenic, seaside artist colony Rocky Neck. Her work inspired me to teach myself how to paint on silk, which I did through the aid of books, online forums, and lots of playful trial and error.
In early 2009, I uprooted, and moved into my new nest in Rehoboth, MA with my soon-to-be husband and two kitties. It was here, in our second-floor apartment, where my silk painting began and my paintings found new life - in my very own studio!
